Balfolk Utrecht Zondag – Tango-elementen toepassen in Balfolk

Na succesvolle workshops op Keltfest 2018, 2019 en Balfolk Utrecht in 2020, en sindsdien vele verzoeken om meer, zijn we weer terug met dit onderwerp. Met Bart en Cecilia gaan we bekijken hoe we elementen uit de Tango kunnen toepassen in Balfolk (koppeldansen).

Workshop Beschrijving
Bart: “15 Jaar geleden kwam ik in aanraking met Balfolk. Direct gegrepen door het plezier en de improvisatie die we vinden in Balfolk trok ik jarenlang in de zomer naar Frankrijk om te dansen en meer te leren over Europese dansen. Kort daarna kwam ik ook in aanraking met de Argentijnse Tango. De muziek en precisie grepen mij en ik raakte direct verslaafd. Na Balfolk workshops te hebben gegeven in binnen- en buitenland, een jaar in Argentinië te hebben gewoond en Tangoworkshops- en optredens te hebben gegeven in Europa, Zuid-Amerika en Azië is het tijd om deze twee invloeden met elkaar te combineren!
Het schakelen tussen Balfolk en Tango kan een grote overgang lijken, maar het is niet de bedoeling dat je een paar ‘truukjes’ aanleert die je vervolgens alleen kan doen met iemand die de workshops ook heeft gedaan. In deze workshop worden Tango- en Balfolk-technieken naast elkaar gelegd en worden de variaties gebruikt als aanknopingspunten om te onderzoeken hoe je -in het algemeen- helder communiceert.”

Cecilia: “Tango geeft de mogelijkheid om heel precies te leiden/volgen, en zo bouwen we de workshops ook op: we beginnen makkelijk en oefenen daarna met variaties die steeds uitdagender, ‘preciezer’ worden. Een goede connectie en danstechniek worden dus meer en meer essentieel, anders lukt het niet. Het leuke daaraan is dat je heel directe feedback krijgt van het dansen: als er iets anders gebeurt dan wat je bedoelde, wat gebeurt er dan wel en waar ligt dat aan? Daarmee kun je je houding, frame, beweging, etc. gaan finetunen, tot het ineens ‘klikt’. Een kleine aanpassing kan het vaak zoveel makkelijker of comfortabeler maken. Voor mij is er niets leuker dan zo’n ‘Aha!’-moment op iemands gezicht te zien verschijnen; deze workshop is daar een soort snelkookpan voor.”

Cecilia en ik kijken samen met jullie naar hoe we elementen uit de Tango kunnen toepassen in Balfolk.

Niveau
Om goed mee te komen in de workshop moet je de basis van de scottish, mazurka en wals (in 3) ontspannen kunnen dansen. Tango-ervaring is niet nodig, omdat we veel tijd met elkaar hebben duiken we ook echt even de Tango in.

Locatie & Deurbeleid
De workshop vindt plaats in de Moira, een fijne zaal in het centrum van Utrecht. Het adres is Wolvenstraat 10 (aan het einde van de Plompetorengracht). Je moet de blauwe deur hebben aan de rechterkant. Dan kom je via de trap naar beneden in de zaal.

After successful workshops at Keltfest 2018, 2019 and Balfolk Utrecht in 2020, and since then many requests for more, we are very happy to announce this topic! Together with Bart and Cecilia, we will dive into applying elements from Tango in Balfolk (couple dances).

Workshop Description
Bart: “More than 10 years ago I came into contact with Balfolk. Immediately captivated by the fun and improvisation we find in Balfolk, I spent many summers in France to dance and learn more about European dances. Shortly thereafter I also discovered Argentine Tango. The music and precision caught me and I immediately became addicted. After giving Balfolk workshops in the Netherlands and abroad, having lived in Argentina for a year and giving Tango workshops and performances in Europe, South America and Asia, it is time to combine these two influences!”
Switching between Balfolk and Tango may seem like a large transition, but the aim isn’t to learn a few “tricks” that you can then only apply with someone who’s also done the workshops. In this workshop, Tango and Balfolk techniques are placed next to each other and the variations are used as starting points to investigate how to communicate clearly – in general.

Cecilia: “Tango offers the opportunity to lead/follow very precisely, and we’ll also build up the workshops that way: we start easily and then practice with variations that are increasingly challenging, more ‘precise’. So a good connection and dance technique become more and more essential, otherwise it doesn’t work. What’s nice about this is that it gives you very direct feedback: if something turns out differently from what you intended, what did happen and why? With this, you can fine tune your posture, frame, movement, etc., until it suddenly “clicks”. A small adjustment can often make things so much easier or more comfortable. For me, there’s nothing nicer than seeing such an “Aha!” moment appear on someone’s face; this workshop is a kind of pressure cooker for that.”

Level
To participate in the workshops you’ll need to be able to dance the basics of the scottish, mazurka and waltz (in 3) in a relaxed way. Tango experience is not necessary, because​ we’ll have plenty of time to dive into Tango as well, so you’ll learn to master the basics as we go.

Location
The ball takes place in the Moira, a nice hall in the center of Utrecht. The address is Wolvenstraat 10 (at the end of Plompetorengracht). Take the blue door on the right and go down the stairs into the hall.
